The Austrian final was held on March 15th in Studio Z1 of the ORF-Zentrum in Vienna, hosted by Lizzi Engstler. The winner was chosen by televoting (50%) & an "expert" jury (50%). Duett were subsequently disqualified when it was discovered that they had already taken part in the 1988 German semi-final with "Das beste".

Simone came 10th at the ESC. Amongst Nika & Simone's backing singers was Marc Berry who represented Austria at ESC 1980 as a member of the group 'Blue Danube'. Waterloo represented Austria at ESC 1976. Erwin Bros represented Austria at ESC 1978 in the group 'Springtime'.
