The Portuguese Semi-Finals were held at the RTP TV Studios in Lisbon. The top 7 songs in each semi-final, chosen by televoting (50%) & an "expert" jury (50%) qualified for the final. On February 27th Diogo Piçarra withdrew from the final due to accusations of plagarism.

José Cid represented Portugal in ESC 1980 & ESC 1998 (as a member of Alma Lusa). Amongst his backing musicians was Pedro Soares who was also a member of Alma Lusa at ESC 1998. Dora Fidalgo was a backing singer for Portugal in ESC 1989 & 1990.
